For the months of May and June 2025, Animal Aid Abroad (AAA) is shining a light on the working gold mine donkeys of the Geita region in Tanzania, Africa. On World Donkey Day (May 8), we not only highlighted the need for greater attention to the plight of working donkeys in developing countries, but we also aimed to tell the story of the gold mine donkeys in Tanzania.

With assistance from your compassionate donations, Action for Protection of Wild Animals (APOWA) provided veterinary care for 104 horses and oxen in April. These working animals were treated for injuries and illnesses, and given general health checks through their mobile clinic. Preventative vaccinations were administered to 119 animals.

During April, our South African partner organisation, Blind Love, treated 21 donkeys and 186 horses at their outreach days. Sadly, they are still dealing with African horse sickness (AHS), which has led to the state vet banning any movement of horses in an attempt to curb the spread. Thankfully, none of the cart horses living in Thaba’nchu town have been affected by AHS so far.

In Israel, our partner group Starting Over are continuing to care for donkeys who have often been rescued from desperate situations.

They have expressed their deepest gratitude for your compassionate support, which is changing lives and helping donkeys to heal from illness or trauma.

With help from your generous donations, Nowzad treated 272 working equines during April. This included deworming and vaccinations.

They also focused on widescale hoof trimming as they moved into spring, with their farrier attending to 77 equines.

Animal Nepal’s Dukuchhap Animal Sanctuary is a permanent refuge for animals rescued from cruelty, neglect and exploitation. Many of our residents are former working equines - donkeys, horses, and mules who spent their lives hauling heavy loads in brick kilns and trekking routes. Here, they find healing, freedom and the dignity they were long denied.

April brought another month of love, care and kindness for the rescued animals living at Animal Nepal’s beautiful sanctuary. Please read on to see how your donations are allowing these special animals to live out their days in comfort and peace.

The Friendicoes team in India assist hundreds of working animals through their Equine Mobile Clinic. They treated 810 equines during February alone. Equines were seen for various issues including colic, wounds, lameness, worms, digestive problems, skin infections or allergies, infectious diseases and dental problems. The team also vaccinated 270 animals in February.
