Dukuchhap Animal Sanctuary - Finding Healing, Freedom and Dignity

Animal Nepal’s Dukuchhap Animal Sanctuary is a permanent refuge for animals rescued from cruelty, neglect and exploitation. Many of our residents are former working equines - donkeys, horses, and mules who spent their lives hauling heavy loads in brick kilns and trekking routes. Here, they find healing, freedom and the dignity they were long denied.

This sanctuary wouldn’t be possible without the support of Animal Aid Abroad, whose sponsorship enables us to care for animals in need. This includes animals like Moksh, one of our most unforgettable residents.

Moksh - a Sanskrit word meaning liberation or freedom - is a name that truly reflects his journey. A former brick kiln mule, Moksh arrived at the sanctuary in 2014 gravely injured. Over time, he not only healed physically but also found freedom from the suffering of his past.

In his younger days, Moksh was one of the naughtiest animals at our sanctuary. Mischievous and full of attitude, he kept staff on their toes; everyone has a story of a close call or a wild encounter with him! But as he has entered his senior years, Moksh has mellowed. His coat, once dark, has taken on a beautiful silver sheen, and he has now become much calmer although he still has his mischievous days.

From a spirited troublemaker to a dignified elder, Moksh’s transformation is a powerful reminder of what love and care can do. Thanks to Animal Aid Abroad and the compassion of our supporters, animals like Moksh are no longer defined by their past - they are cherished for who they are today.
