Five Rescued Donkeys Find Their Forever Homes in Zambia

With your incredible support, the Zambezi Working Donkey Project (ZWDP) continues to transform donkey welfare in Zambia through mobile veterinary clinics, sanctuary care, and education programs. In May, five rescued donkeys from Maramba Farm Sanctuary found their forever homes, marking a milestone in rehabilitation and rehoming efforts.

Expanding Capacity and Impact

Thanks to your ongoing support, ZWDP has expanded its reach, treating more donkeys and engaging additional communities. This growth reflects AAA’s mission to prevent suffering, provide care, and ensure dignity for working animals.

New Team Members

  • Katie Oliver, Visitors’ Centre Coordinator, successfully launched the new centre, strengthening sustainability through tourism, education, and community engagement.

  • Nyambe Lungowe, Education and Liaison Officer, is building relationships with traditional leaders and working to integrate animal welfare education into Zambia’s school curriculum.

These additions are helping ZWDP scale its impact and embed welfare principles into community life.

May Mobile Clinics

During May, ZWDP’s mobile clinics treated 143 donkeys in villages including Maunga, Siamasimbi, and Libuyu. Services included:

  • Deworming (63 donkeys).

  • Routine dipping for parasite control.

  • Community education on humane handling and general animal welfare.

These clinics ensure that working donkeys maintain better body condition and long‑term health.

Visitor & Education Centre

The new Visitor and Education Centre is now open to the public, serving as a hub for tourism, awareness, and community engagement. A permanent display of AAA’s logo honors your role in making this achievement possible. Structured educational programs are set to begin, further embedding welfare values in local communities.

Maramba Farm Sanctuary: Forever Homes for Five Donkeys

The sanctuary continues to provide safe refuge for rescued donkeys, with new identification collars helping staff monitor individual needs. In May, five donkeys were successfully rehomed:

  • Joe, Black’s foal.

  • Luyando, a geriatric donkey.

  • The lost donkey whose owner never returned.

  • Twambo, another geriatric rescue.

  • Shimbi, a gentle jenny.

While they will be missed at Maramba Farm, these donkeys now enjoy loving care and security with their new families.

Building a Kinder Zambia

From veterinary clinics to sanctuary rehoming and education initiatives, ZWDP is creating lasting change for donkeys in Zambia. With AAA’s support, the project continues to expand its reach, improve welfare standards, and inspire communities to treat working animals with compassion, dignity, and respect.

Thank you for making these achievements possible. Together, we are building a kinder Zambia for working donkeys.
