Rescued Buffaloes and Horses Live in Peace and Safety

With your invaluable donations and support, the Visakha Society for Protection and Care of Animals (VSPCA) are caring for 62 rescued working animals - 58 buffaloes and four horses - in two Indian shelters.

Below is their first quarterly report for 2025:

Introduction: A Fresh Chapter of Compassion

With heartfelt gratitude, we present the first quarterly report under Animal Aid Abroad’s renewed support. Your continued funding now supports the care of:

  • Eight buffaloes and one horse at Shelter 1 (Marikavalasa)

  • Fifty buffaloes and three horses at Shelter 2 (Kindness Farm, Koravada)

This new phase marks a vital continuation of our mission to protect and rehabilitate large working animals. Thanks to your support, these animals now live in peace, safety and dignity.

Shelter Updates and Animal Progress

Shelter 1 – Marikavalasa

  • The eight buffaloes have adapted beautifully to their safe, quiet environment. They show improved appetite, mobility and emotional stability.

  • The single horse in this shelter has made noticeable progress — with increased trust in caregivers and a brighter demeanour, responding well to structured feeding and gentle handling.

Shelter 2 – Kindness Farm, Koravada

  • All 50 buffaloes are thriving on the lush pastures of Kindness Farm. Daily grazing, enrichment and quality nutrition have led to visible improvements in coat health, strength and social behaviour.

  • The three horses in this shelter are recovering steadily from their past. They now enjoy clean stables, companionship and individual care routines that promote both physical and emotional healing.

Daily Nutrition and Enrichment

Every animal receives a species-appropriate and balanced diet, ensuring optimal health and recovery:

  • Buffaloes: Green fodder, hay, specialized nutritional feed, fresh vegetables, and seasonal fruits.

  • Horses: Hay, horse feed, gram, wheat bran, vegetables and fruits.

Shelter staff also provide enrichment activities like brushing, shaded rest time and gentle walks for the horses.

Medical and Preventive Care

  • Monthly veterinary checkups ensure that each animal is monitored for signs of illness or injury.

    Routine care includes:

  • Vaccinations and deworming

  • Hoof trimming and wound care

  • Supplementation for age-related issues (especially among older buffaloes)

Rescue Highlight: A Horse’s Journey to Healing

Among the three horses at Shelter 2 is a mare who was in an extremely poor condition when she was rescued. Malnourished, overworked, and fearful, she resisted contact and refused food at first.

With time, structured feeding, and consistent kindness from our caregivers, she has started eating regularly, responding to grooming and even playfully interacting with our team. Her transformation is ongoing, but her spirit is undeniably returning — a living testament to the healing your support makes possible.

Spotlight on Rescued Horse, Kantri

Kantri and his mother were rescued from grave abuses prevalent in the tourism industry. Even as a little horse, Kantri was forced to carry heavy loads during long, sweltering days.

Kantri and his mum now live at the Kindness Shelter. The VSPCA team are so happy they were able to keep them together. Kantri’s true personality is now being revealed. He freely roams all over the shelter, and loves the many trees and plants within it.

Kindness Farm is a wonderful environment for horses – Kantri has room to run and a big corral too. He loves to play and explore the whole shelter.

Use of Funds This Quarter

AAA’s support has been carefully directed toward:

  • Nutritional feed and fodder for all 62 animals.

  • Veterinary care and medical supplies.

Looking Ahead

In the upcoming quarter, we aim to:

  • Add shaded rest enclosures in Shelter 2.

  • Launch low-cost vet camps in nearby rural areas to reduce working animal suffering at the community level.

  • Continue documenting animals’ recoveries to promote humane awareness

Conclusion: A Strong Start

With your unwavering support, 62 animals - once neglected or abandoned - are now safe, respected, and steadily healing.

Thank you for your compassion - it fuels our mission and gives these animals not just shelter but a second chance at life. With your help, we are creating a world where animals are treated with the kindness and dignity they deserve.
