🌿 A Historic Moment for Animal Welfare on Gili Trawangan 🌿

No More Rubbish Collection Ponies!

We’re absolutely thrilled to share some incredible news — the era of rubbish collection ponies on Gili Trawangan has officially come to an end!

For over 15 years, these hardworking ponies carried the weight of 15–20 tonnes of rubbish per day across the island. But as tourism grew and demands increased, it became clear the workload was no longer fair or sustainable for these animals. This milestone was made possible by the amazing combined efforts of Animal Aid Abroad, Red Parka, Sarah Best and Delphine Robbe of Stud Horse Riding and Rescue, and all the other wonderful people who contributed along the way. The final four ponies have been replaced with motorised vehicles and found safe, caring homes.

Meet the Last Four Ponies and Their New Beginnings:

🐴 Mamba, around 18 years old, worked tirelessly for over 15 years. Despite his harsh conditions and suspected laminitis, Mamba remained gentle and kind. He’s now enjoying retirement at Stud Horse Riding and Rescue, happily turned out with new friends.

🐴 Rainbow, approximately 20 years old, shared a similar past. While deeply nervous and wary of humans, Rainbow is slowly learning to trust again at Stud, surrounded by open paddocks, kind people, and plenty of cuddles.

🐴 Agus, a young stallion aged 8–10, joined the rubbish collection team in 2022. Thankfully still fit and healthy, Agus has started a new role as a taxi pony, working limited four-hour shifts with proper care, rest, and a clean, comfortable stable.

Before his rescue

Celebrating his freedom

🐴 Chocolate, a 15-year-old cryptorchid pony blind in one eye and dealing with hindquarter weakness, was the hardest to rehome. We’re grateful to Horses of Gili for giving him a loving retirement where he’ll be cared for long term.

This milestone marks a significant chapter closed for working animals on the island — a testament to what compassion, collaboration, and persistence can achieve.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported this mission. You’ve made a real, lasting difference. ❤️
