A Sad Loss But Crucial Work for Animals Continues

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share some incredibly sad news about our latest sponsored animal, Maverick. Many of you will remember his story – the emaciated horse Nowzad found back in February, utterly resigned to his fate amidst the bleak brick kilns of Afghanistan.

Maverick fought with incredible courage. For weeks, he received intensive care from Nowzad’s dedicated vets, being hoisted to his feet daily and slowly, miraculously, regaining strength.

Against all odds, he was eventually standing on his own four hooves at their hospital - a true testament to his resilience and the tireless efforts of the team. Nowzad even had plans to move him to their donkey sanctuary for a life of peace and comfort.

Sadly, despite all the fight in him and every effort to help him, Maverick just couldn't put on enough weight. His body, so ravaged by his previous harsh life, simply couldn't recover. He passed away peacefully in his stable.

This is a devastating loss for everyone at Nowzad and AAA. We are heartbroken Maverick didn’t get the long, happy life he so deserved. His story, though it ended in sorrow, highlights the immense suffering so many animals endure in the brick kilns and strengthens our resolve to continue this work.

Rest in peace, dear Maverick. You fought so hard.
