three beautiful donkey foals born at our partner sanctuary in israel
Thanks to your incredible support, Starting Over in Israel are currently caring for 61 rescued donkeys within their aptly-named Hope Complex. Recently, they also had three of their donkeys give birth to beautiful foals!
In June, 11 donkeys entered the Hope Complex:
One jenny - who arrived at the sanctuary in late April with a blind, infected, and severely swollen eye - underwent enucleation upon arrival and had been in the infirmary until now. She will continue her recovery in the Hope Complex.
Two jennies from our other herds entered the complex for surgical removal of proud flesh and post-operative recovery.
One donkey - who has been at the sanctuary for several months - and one newly rescued jenny entered the complex because they were underweight and required close monitoring while regaining weight. The jenny's mother and brother entered the complex with her.
Three newly-rescued jennies entered for hoof rehabilitation. They are extremely timid and will also receive the time and support they need to build confidence and adapt to their new environment.
Lastly, one newly-rescued jenny who is also very timid entered the complex after undergoing a procedure to remove salivary gland stones.
Last month, 15 donkeys left the Hope Complex:
Three jennies were transferred to the maternity ward shortly before giving birth to three beautiful foals. Another jenny also moved there and is still awaiting the birth of her foal.
Four jennies and one donkey moved to the old donkeys' compound, where they will enjoy the larger space they need while continuing to receive an adjusted diet.
One donkey successfully completed his rehabilitation. He gained weight, became much stronger, and completed treatment for skin mycosis before moving to another herd.
One donkey and a jenny completed prolonged treatment for skin infections and showed excellent improvement. Their condition is now stable and requires much less frequent treatment, which allowed them to move to another herd.
A young disabled donkey, who arrived at the sanctuary with an old, poorly-healed fracture, is doing well with the support of silicone shoes. Because he is young and friendly, the medical team believe he will integrate smoothly into the rehabilitated herd.
One donkey - who arrived at the sanctuary with a partial hoof amputation - completed his rehabilitation, successfully regrew his hoof, and is now very active. He has also moved to the rehabilitated herd.
Lastly, we sadly said goodbye in June to a beloved elderly jenny - over twenty years old - who had lived in the Hope Complex for a long time due to the daily treatment required for her severe skin sensitivity. She passed away unexpectedly.
