Alleviating Suffering and Providing Compassionate Care for Working Camels in India

In June, the Camel Rescue Centre (CRC) in Bassi, India, supported by Animal Aid Abroad, treated 310 camels and provided veterinary care for 403 other animals including horses, goats, dogs, cows and sheep. Their work is transforming suffering into relief and dignity for working animals across the region.

Veterinary Care for Camels

At the Sambhariya treatment site, a camel suffering from abdominal discomfort was diagnosed with impaction. Timely treatment and supportive care restored her digestive function, while her owner received guidance on feeding and water provision.

In Vijaypura, another camel was treated for mange, a painful skin disease causing irritation and hair loss. Immediate treatment and advice on hygiene helped the animal recover, bringing relief to her owner. These cases highlight the importance of prompt veterinary intervention and ongoing education for handlers.

Supporting Other Animals

CRC’s team also treated 403 animals beyond camels, including routine deworming, vaccinations, and care for wounds and infections. Among them was a goat suffering from a large abdominal abscess. The swelling was incised, drained, cleaned, and dressed, with medicines administered to control pain and prevent infection. The owner was guided on follow‑up care, ensuring the goat’s recovery.
