from neglect to safety: new rescue case at donkey sanctuary in tanzania

Our partner group in Tanzania - Lake Zone Animal Welfare Organization (LAZAWO) - run a caring sanctuary for working donkeys in need of rescue. During May, they rescued another vulnerable donkey who was neglected, weak and had a leg wound.

See how she is healing, with help from your kind donations:

Donkey Sanctuary Report

Overview

In May, the sanctuary remained active as a centre for the care and long-term support of donkeys requiring special attention. This includes permanent residents and donkeys receiving ongoing treatment.

During this period, a vulnerable donkey was rescued from Nyakagwe. She was weak and had a wound on her limb, so was admitted for ongoing wound care, general treatment and protection.

Veterinary Activities - Ongoing Treatment and Rehabilitation

The team continued providing compassionate care for previously rescued donkeys within the sanctuary. They focused on feed supplementation, ensuring adequate grazing, wound management, administration of required medications, and general observations.

These activities were undertaken to ensure the donkeys’ overall wellbeing.

New Rescue Cases

In May, a donkey was rescued from Nyakagwe after being identified with a leg wound and poor body condition due to neglect.

She was safely transferred to the sanctuary, where she is now undergoing supportive care. This includes nutritional support and gradual adaptation to the sanctuary environment under close supervision.

Current Sanctuary Status

As of the end of May, the sanctuary houses 18 donkeys, which includes animals under ongoing care, permanent residents with chronic conditions, and the newly rescued donkey.

All rescued donkeys continue to receive consistent, repeated, and compassionate care and attention from the sanctuary attendant under the close supervision of the LAZAWO team.

Conclusion and Appreciation

May centred on safeguarding the welfare of resident donkeys while responding to the needs of a newly-rescued vulnerable animal.

These efforts are made possible due to your fantastic ongoing support, which helps to fund veterinary treatment, feeding, and other essential care.

We sincerely appreciate your continued commitment to improving the lives of working donkeys in Geita.
