Four More Donkeys Rescued in Tanzania: Local Partnerships Creating Global Impact

Animal Aid Abroad, together with our local partner Lake Zone Animal Welfare Organization (LAZAWO), continues to transform the lives of working donkeys in Tanzania. In February, four more donkeys were rescued and admitted to the sanctuary — a place that serves as a veterinary hospital, rehabilitation centre, and permanent home for animals who have endured terrible suffering.

Overview

Throughout February, the sanctuary operated as a hub of veterinary care, rehabilitation, and safe refuge for donkeys in need. Four new rescues were admitted for urgent treatment, while one rehabilitated donkey was successfully returned to his owner with guidance on proper care and welfare practices. Follow-up monitoring will ensure his continued well-being.

Continued Treatment and Rehabilitation

The sanctuary team provided ongoing veterinary care, wound management, assisted feeding, and medical treatment for resident donkeys — including those permanently unfit for work due to blindness or chronic conditions. Routine health checks, parasite control, and infection management supported steady recovery.

New Rescue Cases

  • Mgasa, a young donkey, was rescued with a fractured hind leg while still healing from a previous forelimb fracture that had healed improperly, leaving her with a bent leg and infection.

  • Another donkey was admitted with a painful proud flesh wound, now being managed through careful cleaning, trimming, and medication.

  • Two additional donkeys showed severe signs of overwork and exhaustion. They are receiving treatment, nutritional support, and close monitoring to restore their health.

Rehoming Update

One donkey completed treatment and rehabilitation and was returned to his owner. The team provided education on proper feeding, workload management, and general welfare to prevent future suffering.

Current Sanctuary Status

By the end of February, the sanctuary was home to 14 donkeys, including:

  • Permanent residents who are blind or permanently unfit for work.

  • Donkeys undergoing treatment and rehabilitation.

  • Newly rescued donkeys under emergency care.

All residents remain under daily veterinary supervision and compassionate care from the LAZAWO team.

Conclusion and Appreciation

February was marked by the rescue of four new donkeys, the successful rehabilitation of one returned to his owner, and the continued treatment of sanctuary residents.

This progress is only possible thanks to your donations, which fund medications, transport, and veterinary services.

Together with LAZAWO, Animal Aid Abroad is proving that local partnerships are the key to global change — turning burden into care and ensuring working animals are no longer invisible.
