Veterinary Care and Education Creates Long‑Term Change for Working Animals in India

Animal Aid Abroad, together with our partner Action for Protection of Wild Animals (APOWA), is creating lasting improvements in the welfare of working animals in India. In March, APOWA’s mobile clinics treated 106 horses and bullocks, vaccinated 447 animals, and provided education workshops to owners — combining immediate relief with long‑term change.

Mobile Veterinary Clinics Deliver Essential Care

APOWA’s mobile clinic reached communities where access to affordable veterinary services is limited. Treatments addressed viral fevers, respiratory and digestive disorders, wounds, infections, skin diseases, fractures, and malnutrition. These timely interventions reduced suffering and improved the health of working animals who are often overexerted and overloaded.

Vaccination Drive Strengthens Disease Prevention

A total of 447 animals were vaccinated against HS & BQ, followed by booster doses to strengthen immunity. Preventive care is critical in reducing disease outbreaks and ensuring healthier, more resilient working animals across villages.

Helpline and Community Volunteers Expand Reach

APOWA’s veterinary helpline supported 27 owners with timely advice, extending care beyond field visits. In addition, trained community volunteers provided first aid to 39 animals, reducing pain and preventing complications. These volunteers also educated owners on better husbandry practices, reinforcing welfare at the grassroots level.

Education Workshops Build Awareness

In March, 34 owners attended workshops focused on humane, science‑based care. Harmful traditional practices were discouraged, while summer management guidelines — including heat stress prevention, proper shelter, balanced nutrition, and timely veterinary attention — were shared. Water pots were installed at common congregation points, ensuring animals had access to clean water during extreme heat.

Follow‑Up Visits Ensure Recovery

The veterinary team conducted 32 follow‑up visits to monitor recovery and reinforce preventive care. This continuity ensures that treatments are effective and that owners remain engaged in improving welfare.

Global Impact Made Possible by You

Every treatment, vaccination, and workshop is powered by your generosity. Together, AAA and APOWA are proving that local partnerships are the key to global change — turning burden into care and creating long‑term improvements for working animals in India.
