Rescued Donkeys Discover Healing, Kindness, and Joy at Sanctuary in Udaipur, India
Animal Aid Abroad, together with our partner Animal Aid Unlimited (AAU), is transforming the lives of working donkeys in India. At their sanctuary in Udaipur, 17 male donkeys are currently receiving care, while an additional nine females and one male are housed at AAU’s Animal Birth Control (ABC) centre. Thanks to your support, these animals are experiencing safety, healing, and even joy.
Life at the Sanctuary
The sanctuary is not only a place of recovery but also of happiness. Donkeys like Bob and his best friend were recently seen playing tug‑of‑war with sticks, a heartwarming reminder of how rescued animals can rediscover joy. Sandra, a female donkey at the ABC centre, loves to sunbathe, though her habit has caused chest wounds. With daily bandaging and padding, she is now healing.
Close bonds also flourish here: donkey Nico and horse Alex are inseparable companions, showing that love and friendship thrive across species. Meanwhile, Snow Flake, a rescued donkey, is receiving treatment for a hoof wound with antibiotics and daily care.
Recent Rescues and Treatments
Several donkeys have been admitted in recent months:
One underwent surgery for a rectal prolapse but sadly passed away later, likely due to complications.
Another was brought in with a severe leg infection after a fight, now under treatment with antibiotics and bandaging.
A third arrived with a closed hind leg fracture; the sanctuary team removed a harmful makeshift splint and is providing proper care.
These cases highlight the critical role AAU plays in offering professional veterinary care and safe refuge for working animals who would otherwise suffer without help.
Global Impact Made Possible by You
Every rescue, every treatment, and every joyful moment is powered by your generosity. Together, AAA and AAU are proving that local partnerships are the key to global change — turning burden into care and ensuring that donkeys once abandoned or injured now live with dignity, safety, and compassion.
