Nepalese Sanctuary Cares for Society’s Most Vulnerable Animals

Animal Aid Abroad (AAA), together with our partner Animal Nepal, continues to provide lifelong care and dignity for rescued equines and other vulnerable animals. The sanctuary offers a safe haven where donkeys, horses, cows, and companion animals can live free from suffering, surrounded by compassion and protection.

A Peaceful Goodbye to Markhu

In April, the sanctuary said a heartfelt farewell to Markhu, a senior horse who had lived in safety since 2014. After 12 years of loving care, veterinarians made the difficult decision to put him to sleep due to his deteriorating condition. Markhu’s legacy is a reminder of why sanctuaries matter — they transform lives of hardship into years of dignity and peace.

New Rescue: Puppy Riddhi

A young puppy named Riddhi joined the sanctuary in April. Confident and playful, she quickly bonded with the donkeys, even riding on the back of senior resident Bruna. Her arrival highlights the sanctuary’s role in offering protection to animals of all kinds.

Ongoing Veterinary Care

  • Kaali the cow received treatment for temporary vision loss, likely caused by an allergic reaction, and has now recovered.

  • Preventive care, wound management, and shelter maintenance continue for all residents, ensuring resilience against extreme weather conditions such as heavy rains and strong winds.

Sanctuary Tales: Changing Perceptions

To mark Dr Jane Goodall Day on April 3rd, Animal Nepal launched the Sanctuary Tales video series in collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute Nepal. These stories showcase residents like donkeys, mules, and buffaloes, spreading the message that all animals deserve care and dignity, including those often overlooked in society.

Emergency Rescues Amid Demolitions

Following government‑ordered demolitions of settlements on encroached lands, Animal Nepal stepped in to rescue over 30 displaced dogs, along with hens, chicks, cats, and rabbits. With temporary shelters excluding animals, families faced heartbreaking choices. The sanctuary’s intervention ensured these animals were not abandoned, reinforcing AAA’s mission to protect the most vulnerable.

Global Impact Made Possible by You

Every rescue, treatment, and act of compassion is powered by your generosity. Together, AAA and Animal Nepal are turning burden into care and proving that local partnerships are the key to global change — ensuring Nepal’s working and companion animals live in safety, dignity, and love.
