a special sanctuary where donkeys can heal & recover from former harsh lives
Animal Aid Abroad (AAA), together with our partner Starting Over Sanctuary in Israel, is transforming the lives of rescued working donkeys by providing intensive care, rehabilitation, and dignity. Many of these animals arrive after years of abuse and neglect, suffering from complex physical and emotional conditions. Today, 69 donkeys, two mules, and one mare are receiving specialized treatment in the Hope Complex, a safe haven where healing begins.
New Arrivals in April
Eight donkeys and one mare entered the Hope Complex last month:
Elderly and underweight jennies moved from the infirmary for specialized feeding.
Two new rescues, one requiring long‑term hoof rehabilitation and another undergoing dental treatment.
Two donkeys treated for facial abscesses.
One elderly jenny admitted for skin and coat rehabilitation.
One donkey with a partial hoof amputation showing remarkable progress, now discharged from the infirmary.
One elderly, disabled, and pregnant mare placed in the New Beginning area for safe monitoring.
Departures and New Beginnings
Six donkeys left the complex in April:
Three due to significant improvement in conditions such as abscesses, skin health, and lameness.
One elderly jenny, approximately 30 years old, was humanely euthanized after her condition deteriorated.
Two jennies transferred to the maternity ward gave birth to healthy foals, symbolizing hope and renewal.
Global Rescue Efforts
In addition to local sanctuary care, 50 donkeys were flown to sanctuaries in France, many of them mother‑and‑foal pairs. These animals now have the opportunity to live out their lives in safety and love, reflecting AAA’s mission to turn burden into care across borders.
Global Impact Made Possible by You
Every rescue, treatment, and act of compassion is powered by your generosity. Together, AAA and Starting Over Sanctuary are proving that local partnerships are the key to global change — ensuring that donkeys once burdened by harsh lives now experience dignity, healing, and protection.
