Working Towards a Zambia Where All Donkeys Are Treated with Compassion
Animal Aid Abroad, together with our partner Zambezi Working Donkey Project (ZWDP), is committed to creating a Zambia where working donkeys are free from suffering and treated with dignity. In March, their mobile clinics and field checks reached hundreds of animals, delivering vital veterinary care, humane equipment, and owner education.
Mobile Veterinary Clinics and Field Care
Three mobile clinics and five field checks provided deworming treatments for 60 donkeys, protecting them against parasites and improving body condition. In addition, 261 donkeys were dipped to guard against ticks, fleas, and biting insects that spread disease. Sixteen donkeys received treatment for harness‑related wounds, and eight new humane harnesses were distributed to prevent future injuries.
Overall, ZWDP exceeded their monthly target by 82.3%, reflecting both their dedication and the growing need for proper animal care in rural communities.
Sixteen donkeys were treated for wounds caused by improperly-fitted and/or unpadded harnesses.

Addressing Overloading and Owner Education
During a field trip to Libuyu, the team intervened when they found a scotch cart overloaded with firewood. The owner was warned and asked to reduce the load to protect the donkeys. While challenges remain, many owners are now compliant, using padded harnesses and loading carts responsibly — a sign that education efforts are making progress.
Rescue and Enforcement: Zebra and Sadic
Two previously rescued donkeys, Zebra and Sadic, were found again in poor condition, along with two others. When the owner resisted rescue efforts, police were called to assist. Although only Zebra was eventually surrendered, the case remains open, and ZWDP continues to liaise with authorities to secure the welfare of the remaining animals.
Sanctuary Update
At Maramba Farm, rescued donkeys are thriving under routine care, including daily temperature checks, biweekly body condition scoring, and dipping to prevent parasites. These measures ensure long‑term health and safety for animals who have endured hardship.
Global Impact Made Possible by You
Every clinic, rescue, and harness distributed is powered by your generosity. Together, AAA and ZWDP are proving that local partnerships are the key to global change — turning burden into care and building a Zambia where donkeys live with compassion and respect.
