Celebrating World Donkey Day with AAA and LAZAWO in Tanzania

On May 8th, Animal Aid Abroad (AAA) joined forces with our partner Lake Zone Animal Welfare Organization (LAZAWO) to celebrate World Donkey Day in Geita, Tanzania. This global event highlights the vital role donkeys play in rural communities and the importance of ensuring their welfare through education, veterinary care, and humane treatment.

Three Days of Awareness and Action

From May 5–7, AAA and LAZAWO hosted a dynamic program that included:

  • TV and radio interviews raising awareness about donkey welfare.

  • Educational sessions with local primary and secondary school children focused on humane handling, proper care, and the Five Freedoms of animal welfare.

  • Community clinics teaching adults how to care for their donkeys and prevent injuries.

Durable, weather‑proof posters were also displayed in schools and community spaces, serving as permanent reminders of the importance of compassion and proper treatment.

Impact and Engagement

The campaign was enthusiastically received by both students and adults, demonstrating a strong opportunity to expand outreach and reduce suffering through ongoing education. By combining awareness, veterinary support, and practical training, AAA and LAZAWO are proving that local partnerships are the key to global change.

Conclusion

World Donkey Day in Tanzania was a resounding success — a celebration of donkeys’ invaluable contributions and a call to action for their welfare. With your support, AAA continues to turn burden into care, ensuring working animals worldwide receive the dignity and compassion they deserve.
