Providing Critical Care for Vulnerable Animals in Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, our partner group Nowzad undertook no less than 23 mobile vet clinics during October. This amazing effort resulted in 145 working equines receiving essential veterinary care, including deworming and vaccinations.

They also provided critical care for other animals in need, including cows, calves and goats.

Veterinary Care & Treatment

During October, Nowzad treated 145 working equines for a variety of ailments, including:

  • Respiratory issues

  • Wounds

  • Colic

  • Limping

  • Anorexia/malnutrition

  • Body pain

  • Diarrhoea

  • Weakness

  • Rabies

  • Fractures

  • Coughing

  • Foot and Mouth Disease

  • Traumatic Reticulo Peritonitis (TRP) - commonly known as hardware disease. This is a condition caused by an animal ingesting a sharp, heavy object like a nail or piece of wire. This object may perforate the stomach wall - specifically the reticulum (the second stomach chamber). This can lead to infection, internal bleeding and other serious complications.

Many working equines received essential vaccinations against deadly diseases.

Twelve other animals were also treated last month, including cows, calves and goats.

Additionally, the team’s farrier provided 31 horses with hoof care.

Emergency Call-Outs

The team attended to three animals who had emergency conditions during October. This included two horses with colic and a cow who had rabies.

Hospitalisations

Twelve animals needed to stay in Nowzad’s hospital last month, including:

  • 3 donkeys who had bone fractures and various wounds.

  • 5 horses who were suffering from diarrhoea, colic or malnutrition/anorexia.

  • 2 cows who entered the hospital for TRP and rabies.

  • 2 calves who needed intensive care for weakness and malnutrition/anorexia.

Nowzad also attended to a horse who required wound suturing.

Blanket Distribution

Forty-seven blankets were distributed for horses, donkeys and cows recently. These keep the animals warm and also help to prevent wounds from saddles and harnessing.

With help from your fantastic donations, Nowzad will continue assisting many of Afghanistan’s most vulnerable animals. Together, we are alleviating suffering and making their lives worth living.
