Alleviating the Suffering of India’s Working Equines

Our hard-working partner group in India, Friendicoes, treated an incredible 710 equines through their mobile vet clinic in October.

With support from your generous donations, the team also rescued an abandoned pony and mule recently, taking them to their sanctuary where they can now live in peace and safety.

Friendicoes provided essential care for working equines with issues including:

  • Colic

  • Wounds

  • Lameness

  • Digestive problems

  • Skin infections / allergy

  • Infectious diseases

  • Dental problems

  • Farrier cases

In addition, they provided deworming and vaccinations for hundreds of equines.

Some of the key cases they saw are outlined below:

Colic -

  • This is often signalled by animals frequently lying down and getting up.

  • The vet team provided pain killers and fluid therapy for affected equines. Laxatives were administered via a stomach tube.

  • Equines find almost immediate relief following this treatment.

Road accident -

  • While working on a road, a horse had an accident with a vehicle, leading to a lacerated wound on her hind leg.

  • The wound was cleaned with antiseptics.

  • Antibiotics, pain killers and a tetanus vaccine were given.

Lacerated leg wound -

  • Injury caused by an iron rod.

  • Lacerated wound on hind leg.

  • The team cleaned the wound with antiseptics and dressed it properly.

Thread injury on hind leg -

  • A thick thread was tied to the leg, leading to a deep, lacerated wound on the leg.

  • Thread was removed.

  • Wound was cleaned with antiseptics and dressed.

Head injury -

  • This pony was working on railway track.

  • While grazing, she was hit by a train and sustained a lacerated wound on her forehead.

  • The wound was cleaned with antiseptics and sutured.

October Rescues

Pony -

  • A pony was rescued from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

  • He was abandoned due to old age and no longer being able to work.

  • Knuckling of foreleg was present.

  • The pony is now safely at Friendicoes’ sanctuary.

Mule -

  • A mule was also rescued from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

  • She had a poorly-healed fracture.

  • The mule was safely brought to the sanctuary.

Field Paravet Program

Friendicoes’ paravets saw 401 equines in October. They provide follow-up visits and basic medical care for working animals in need.

We cannot thank you enough for your heartfelt support and donations. You are helping to fund Friendicoes’ essential programs for working equines, and are alleviating suffering for hundreds of animals each and every month.
