rescuing ricky & peter: from extreme neglect to safety and hope
In Afghanistan, the Nowzad team recently rescued two working horses with severe wounds, malnutrition and weakness. Ricky and Peter are now living safely at Nowzad’s sanctuary and are receiving exceptional care.
The team also provided 97 other working donkeys and horses with essential veterinary care during December.
Rescuing Ricky and Peter
Two poor horses were found by Nowzad with severe back wounds and weakness caused by overwork, neglect and malnourishment.
Ricky and Peter required intensive care in Nowzad’s hospital, but thankfully they are now free from suffering and have a much brighter future in the sanctuary.
They will receive all the love, care, food and protection they need, thanks to your wonderful donations.
Other Hospitalisations
Aside from Ricky and Peter, a donkey and a calf were also hospitalised during December.
The donkey was hospitalised due to wounds and the calf stayed in Nowzad’s hospital for hernia surgery.
Mobile Vet Clinic
The Nowzad team provided 97 working equines with veterinary care and treatment during December.
Some of the ailments seen in working equines included:
Respiratory issues
Wounds
Limping
Mastitis
Body pain
Constipation
Anorexia
Broken leg
Foot and mouth disease
Tetanus
Skin conditions
Theileriosis (tick-borne disease)
Nine cows and a calf were also treated last month.

Farrier Treatments
Sixty-five working equines were attended to by a farrier during December.
New Stable
The horses at Nowzad’s sanctuary were treated to a new stable recently.
