from abandonment to safety: colombian sanctuary offers hope for equines in need

Animal Aid Abroad, together with our partner Namigni Animal Sanctuary, is transforming the lives of vulnerable equines in Colombia. Currently caring for 22 rescued donkeys and horses, the sanctuary continues to provide safety, nutrition, and veterinary care for animals once abandoned or at risk of slaughter.

March Rescue: Muñeca’s Second Chance

In late March, local advocates in Anapoima, Cundinamarca, reported a four‑year‑old female donkey at risk of being discarded and sent to slaughter. With the sanctuary already at capacity caring for 72 large herbivores, Namigni activated its network of pre‑screened adoptive families. Thanks to this collaboration, Muñeca was rescued and relocated to Zipaquirá on March 31, where she was welcomed into a loving home. Her story reflects AAA’s mission to turn burden into care by empowering local partnerships to deliver lasting change.

Sustaining Care for Rescued Equines

Rising feed costs in March posed a challenge, but with support from Animal Aid Abroad and patron Philip Wollen, the sanctuary was able to sustain its feeding program. Specialized horse feed enriched with nutritional supplements continues to be provided, ensuring proper growth for younger equines and balanced maintenance for older animals with chronic conditions.

Medical supplies funded by AAA also covered routine preventative care and minor treatments, helping the sanctuary maintain high standards of welfare for all residents.

Global Impact Made Possible by You

Every rescue, every meal, and every treatment is powered by your generosity. Together, AAA and Namigni Animal Sanctuary are proving that local partnerships are the key to global change — ensuring that equines once abandoned or at risk of slaughter now live in safety, comfort, and dignity.
