New Feeding Program Helps Donkeys Affected by Drought
An important part of caring for donkeys in the mining communities of Tanzania is providing adequate feed and nutrition. With help from your wonderful donations, Lakezone Animal Welfare Organization (LAZAWO) have instigated a crucial donkey feeding program in Mgusu - a mining area particularly affected by drought.
So far, 778 donkeys are benefitting from this feeding program.
1. Background Statement
Mgusu’s gold mining area has been severely affected by a prolonged drought, leading to a shortage of feed for resident working donkeys. The deteriorating condition of the donkeys posed serious welfare concerns.
In response, the LAZAWO team reported the situation and sought emergency assistance from Animal Aid Abroad (AAA). With your immediate support, we procured concentrates, maize bran and feeders to supplement the affected donkeys under the careful supervision of the LAZAWO team. These actions aimed to restore the health of the working donkeys and prevent further deterioration during the ongoing drought.
2. Feeding Program and Records
The supplementary feeding program commenced on 3rd October 2025 under the supervision of the LAZAWO team. Daily feeding is being monitored to ensure that all donkeys receive adequate nutrition in clean and safe conditions. Altogether, 778 donkeys have benefitted from the feeding program.
Using the newly acquired feeders has improved hygiene and reduced feed wastage. The team continuously monitored feeding behaviours, health progress and community feedback throughout the program.
3. Projected Impacts with Continued Program Implementation
This nutritional support will help working donkeys of Mgusu regain and maintain healthy body conditions, enhancing their resilience and reducing illness.
Through this feeding program, deaths and suffering caused by drought-related malnutrition will be prevented.
Engagement with local communities - especially donkey owners and handlers - will strengthen knowledge of proper donkey nutrition and welfare practices among them.
4. Appreciation
The LAZAWO team extends heartfelt gratitude to Animal Aid Abroad and SPCA International for your timely support and compassion toward the working donkeys of Mgusu. Your assistance is proving relief to both the animals and the families who rely on them.
This program offers renewed hope for donkeys and their owners amidst the ongoing drought. The Mgusu community joins us in expressing deep appreciation for your commitment, and the tangible difference you are making in the lives of both animals and people.
