Two More Working Donkeys Rescued by Our Partner Sanctuary in Tanzania
In Geita, Tanzania, the Lake Zone Animal Welfare Organization (LAZAWO), supported by Animal Aid Abroad, continues to provide refuge and rehabilitation for donkeys rescued from exhaustion, abandonment, and lack of resources. In June, two more donkeys were brought to safety, bringing the total number of residents at the sanctuary to 20.
Ongoing Sanctuary Care
The sanctuary remains a place of healing for donkeys requiring long‑term support. Permanent residents and those under treatment receive consistent veterinary care, nutritious feed, and safe shelter. Daily management includes wound care, medication, grazing opportunities, and close observation to ensure each animal’s wellbeing.
New Rescue Cases
Two donkeys, Lize and Madaha, were rescued in June. Lize collapsed after struggling to find water and pasture during the dry season, while Madaha was abandoned after being completely exhausted from overwork. Both received urgent veterinary treatment before being transferred to the sanctuary, where they are now recovering with nutritional support and attentive monitoring.
Sanctuary Improvements
To strengthen facilities, eight solar lights were installed to improve security and visibility at night. Two 5,000‑litre water tanks were also added, ensuring reliable access to clean water for the donkeys during the dry season. These upgrades reflect the sanctuary’s commitment to providing a safe and sustainable environment for its residents.
Current Status
By the end of June, the sanctuary was caring for 20 donkeys, including permanent residents, those receiving temporary treatment, and the newly rescued cases. Each animal benefits from compassionate care provided by the sanctuary team under veterinary supervision.
Building a Future of Compassion
The continued rescues and improvements at the sanctuary highlight the importance of providing safe spaces for working animals who have endured hardship. Every donkey cared for represents progress toward a future where animals are treated with dignity and compassion.
This work is only possible because of your support. Every rescue, every treatment, and every sanctuary upgrade is a direct result of your generosity, allowing AAA to sustain partnerships like LAZAWO and continue transforming the lives of working animals.
