new reward program motivates owners to care for their donkeys in tanzania
Animal Aid Abroad, together with our local partner Lake Zone Animal Welfare Organization (LAZAWO), continues to transform the welfare of working donkeys in Tanzania. In March, the LAZAWO team treated 518 donkeys across six gold mining areas — Mgusu, Nyarugusu, Stamico, Lwamgasa, Nyaruyeye, and Magenge — as well as surrounding communities. These hardworking animals, often subjected to harsh conditions, received veterinary care for wounds, eye infections, lameness, respiratory illnesses, trypanosomiasis, skin infections, and routine deworming.
A New Approach: Rewarding Humane Care
March also marked the launch of an innovative reward program designed to motivate donkey owners to prioritize welfare. Handlers whose animals were healthy, free from wounds, and treated humanely were recognized publicly and awarded AAA tee‑shirts and hats. Five winners from Mgusu and Stamico were honored in front of their peers, reinforcing the message that compassion and proper care are valued and celebrated.
This program is already showing impact. More owners are adopting humane handling practices, replacing harmful sticks with shakers, and reducing injuries caused by cruelty. By combining veterinary treatment, education, and incentives, AAA and LAZAWO are proving that local partnerships are the key to global change.
Rescue Spotlight: Ntumizi’s Story
One case in March highlighted the importance of this work. Ntumizi, a donkey from Nyamigota village, was found with a deep hind limb injury caused by cruelty. His owner, Jason, was devastated but reached out for help. LAZAWO’s rescue team transported Ntumizi to the sanctuary, where he underwent surgery, wound care, and rest. Today, Ntumizi is healing under close supervision, gradually regaining comfort and strength. His recovery is a powerful reminder that every donkey deserves dignity, relief, and a second chance.
Community Clinics and Education
In addition to individual treatments, LAZAWO conducted two general clinics in March, reaching nearly 160 donkeys and engaging over 50 handlers. These clinics provided farrier care, harness adjustments, and education on humane handling. Owners were reminded of Tanzanian animal welfare laws and the penalties for cruelty, reinforcing accountability alongside compassion.
Challenges Ahead
Despite progress, tetanus remains a serious threat due to gaps in booster vaccinations. Preventable deaths continue to occur, underscoring the urgent need for consistent immunization programs. Addressing this challenge is critical to sustaining long‑term welfare improvements.
Global Impact Made Possible by You
This work is only possible thanks to your support. Donations fund veterinary drugs, transport, rescue vehicles, and essential supplies — enabling LAZAWO to reach hundreds of donkeys each month and provide lifesaving care. With your help, donkeys like Ntumizi are rescued, treated, and given the chance to live free from pain.
Together, we are turning burden into care, and proving that local partnerships are the key to global change.
LAZAWO remains committed to continuing this work and further improving the welfare of working donkeys in Geita under your generous support and guidance.
