Changing Attitudes Towards Donkeys in Tanzania

Between January and March, Lake Zone Animal Welfare Organization (LAZAWO) provided veterinary care for no less than 740 working donkeys in the Musoma region of Tanzania.

Such a huge number of donkeys could only be assisted due to your compassionate donations for working animals.

Donkeys were treated for parasitic diseases such as trypanosomiasis and piroplasmosis, respiratory infections, wounds, worms and lameness.

LAZAWO’s vet, Dr Israel, also advised 93 community members on donkey welfare. This advice covered appropriate workloads, adequate rest, recognition of illness, proper nutrition and regular hydration.

Prior to LAZAWO’s great work, community members rarely called a vet for their working animals. However, some owners are now contacting Dr Israel or other vets and using their own money to obtain treatment for their donkeys as required.

This demonstrates a shift in attitudes is occurring and owners are beginning to understand the importance of caring for the health and welfare of their working animals. This is incredibly positive and will gradually lead to greater wellbeing for donkeys in these communities.

Thank you again for your kind support, which is continuing to change donkeys’ lives in Africa. Together, we are creating a world where all animals are valued, cared for and respected.
