Tanzanian Sanctuary Offers Vulnerable Donkeys Dignity, Care & Protection

Animal Aid Abroad (AAA), together with our partner Lake Zone Animal Welfare Organization (LAZAWO), is safeguarding the welfare of vulnerable donkeys in Tanzania through sanctuary care, veterinary treatment, and compassionate management. In April, the sanctuary continued to provide intensive support for resident equines, including the rescue of Maria, a blind retired donkey now receiving lifelong protection.

New Rescue: Maria’s Story

In April, Maria, a blind and retired donkey from Nyarugusu, was admitted to the sanctuary. Vulnerable and at risk, she is now receiving nutritional support and adapting to her new environment under close supervision. Her rescue reflects AAA’s mission to turn burden into care by empowering local partnerships to deliver lasting change.

Sanctuary as a Centre of Healing

The sanctuary remains a vital hub for donkeys requiring special attention, offering:

  • Assisted feeding and nutritional support

  • Wound management and medication

  • Preventive care such as deworming and infection control

  • Close monitoring of body condition and overall wellbeing

These interventions ensure comfort, stability, and dignity for donkeys who have endured hardship.

Sanctuary Status

The sanctuary currently houses 17 donkeys, including permanent residents with chronic conditions and newly rescued cases. Each animal receives daily attention from the sanctuary attendant, supported by LAZAWO’s veterinary team, ensuring consistent welfare and protection.

Global Impact Made Possible by You

Every rescue, treatment, and act of compassion is powered by your generosity. Together, AAA and LAZAWO are proving that local partnerships are the key to global change — ensuring that donkeys in Tanzania live in safety, comfort, and dignity.
