Enabling Recovery and Wellbeing for Animals Rescued from Neglect, Abuse or Abandonment
In Bangalore, India, Compassion Unlimited Plus Action (CUPA), supported by Animal Aid Abroad, is caring for more than 120 rescued working animals at their sanctuary. With your support, four more animals were rescued this quarter, including two ponies from an abusive situation and a mare with her foal following a severe accident.
Project Overview
Since 2012, CUPA’s Large Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre has provided a safe haven for cows, bullocks, ponies, donkeys, and horses rescued from neglect or harsh working conditions. The centre combines shelter‑based rehabilitation with outreach health camps, aiming to improve welfare for 250 to 300 animals annually.
This initiative focuses on:
Supporting animals affected by trauma and cruelty
Delivering comprehensive medical and rehabilitative care
Enhancing welfare and dignity for rescued animals
Raising community awareness and compassion
Rescuing and rehabilitating large working animals
Medical Care and Case Studies
The veterinary team continues to provide tailored treatment for each resident.
Anaemia treatment: Ponies and donkeys such as Tuluk, Ashley, Barney, and Ashwa have shown significant improvement through regular care, while geriatric residents Thor and Pink Floyd receive lifelong treatment.
Asghar’s story: A senior equine received advanced diagnostics and treatment for chronic hoof issues, improving his comfort until his peaceful passing in June.
Thanos’ rehabilitation: Rescued with neurological issues, he is receiving long‑term supportive care to maintain quality of life.
Shivaraj’s recovery: A bull with a cancerous hoof growth has improved significantly under daily treatment.
Karun’s healing: A bull with a severe horn injury recovered fully through intensive wound care.
These cases highlight the importance of sustained veterinary intervention and compassionate management.
Recent Rescues
Fraser and Cooke: Two ponies rescued from prolonged abuse in Bengaluru are now receiving specialised treatment and emotional support.
Phoebe and Joey: A mare with a fractured leg and her foal were rescued together, ensuring they remain side by side during treatment. Phoebe’s recovery is being closely monitored, with prosthetic options considered if necessary.
Rural Pony Health Camp
In Tumkur district, CUPA conducted a health camp for 55 working ponies. Each animal received deworming, nutritional supplements, and preventive care. Owners were provided with feed supplies and guidance on welfare practices, helping improve resilience and long‑term wellbeing for ponies in rural communities.
Building a Future of Compassion
From emergency rescues to rural health camps, CUPA’s work demonstrates how timely intervention, rehabilitation, and preventive care can transform the lives of working animals. Each recovery reflects the mission of AAA and its partners to reduce suffering and restore dignity.
This progress is only possible because of your support. Every rescue, every treatment, and every outreach camp is a direct result of your generosity, allowing AAA to sustain partnerships like CUPA and continue improving the welfare of working animals in India.
