Providing Care & Dignity for India’s Working Camels

The hardworking team at the Camel Rescue Centre (CRC) in Bassi, India, were kept busy treating 273 camels and 287 other animals for various conditions during November.

Read some of the animals’ stories below:

Story One

The CRC team visited a camel who was suffering from lameness. The animal was having difficulty walking and bearing weight. After clinical assessment, appropriate treatment was started at the site. Medicines were administered to relieve pain and inflammation.

The owner was advised the camel needed rest and proper care. He was guided on management and prevention of further injury. Timely treatment helped to improve the camel’s comfort and mobility.

Story Two

A camel owner came to the CRC because his camel was suffering from a maggot wound in his nose. The team examined the camel, then carefully removed the maggots from his nose. The wound was cleaned and treated.

Medicines were provided to control infection and pain. The camel showed relief after treatment and his owner was advised on wound care and fly control to prevent recurrence.

Daily Clinics & Monthly Camp

In November, the CRC team provided veterinary care for many animals other than camels. They saw horses, goats, dogs, cows and sheep. In the daily clinic and monthly camp, 287 animals other than camels were treated.

A couple of case studies are outlined below:

Goat Case

A goat who had been hit by a bike was brought into CRC’s hospital. She could not stand up after the accident. On examination, we found that her for leg was broken and she was unable to bear weight. She was in severe pain and was moaning.

Firstly, she was administered pain killers. After examination, we decided to immobilise the fractured leg. A plaster of Paris bandage was applied under sedation. We advised the owner to take care of the goat and the bandaged part of her leg. We also advised the owner to provide nutritious food for her.

Now, the goat is able to stand up and has started eating grass.

Buffalo Case

Mukesh brought his buffalo to our CRC hospital for a pregnancy diagnosis. The animal was examined calmly in a clean and safe environment by our veterinary team. A thorough clinical check was carried out to assess her reproductive status.

After careful examination, the pregnancy was confirmed and Mukesh was informed. He was guided on proper nutrition, care and management during the pregnancy.

Mukesh expressed relief and gratitude after receiving clear advice and support from the hospital staff.

It is thanks to you that these animals could receive treatment, care and attention when they needed it most. With your ongoing support, the CRC team will continue to alleviate suffering for hundreds of camels and other animals in India.
