A Special Sanctuary Where Camels Receive Care and Dignity
In Jodhpur, India, rescued camels are finding safety, veterinary care, and dignity at the Friendicoes Camel Rescue Centre. Supported by Animal Aid Abroad, the sanctuary not only provides lifelong care for residents but also reaches camels in surrounding villages, ensuring that animals once neglected now receive treatment and compassion.
Extending Veterinary Care Beyond the Sanctuary
Over the past quarter, the Friendicoes team attended to 86 camels in villages near the sanctuary. With the aid of a motorbike, veterinarians delivered timely care to animals in remote areas, treating conditions that would otherwise go unnoticed.
Health Issues and Treatments
A total of 126 camels were treated for a range of conditions including colic, mange, respiratory infections, indigestion, and injuries caused by equipment or accidents.
Mange was managed with Ivermectin injections.
Lacerated leg wounds from fencing wire were cleaned, dressed, and treated with antibiotics and pain relief.
Saddle‑related back injuries were disinfected and dressed.
Wooden nose peg injuries were treated, and 40 harmful wooden pegs were replaced with safer plastic alternatives.
Eye injuries from grazing accidents were managed with medicated drops, restoring comfort and vision.

The camels’ eyes were washed with clean water and treated with medicated eye drops.
Rescue Operations
Two significant rescues highlighted the team’s commitment:
A camel was saved from a deep well in Somaser village with the help of a crane and brought safely to the sanctuary.
A donkey suffering from an old fracture was rescued from Bakwan and given shelter and care.
These rescues demonstrate the sanctuary’s role as a lifeline for animals in distress.
