Vet Care + Education Improves the Welfare of Horses and Oxen
Action for Protection of Wild Animals (APOWA) in India are a lifeline for sick horses and oxen. During June, they assisted 93 working animals through their mobile clinic. The vet team treated a variety of conditions, including fevers, coughs, wounds, infections, diarrhoea, skin complaints, parasites and malnutrition, amongst others. APOWA’s efforts significantly improved the animals' overall health and quality of life.
The team also provided preventative care, such as vaccinations and deworming, to ensure the animals' long-term health and wellbeing. The project provided preventative vaccinations for 289 animals in June, including against foot-and-mouth disease.
Thirty-two owners benefited from APOWA’s helpline desk service last month, which is run by vets and provides timely solutions for unwell animals. Owners are able to discuss their animals' health concerns and receive immediate professional advice.
Working Animal Champions - made up of trained, local community members - provided 59 animals with first aid treatment. These timely interventions helped to alleviate immediate pain and prevent potential health complications.
APOWA also focus heavily on education and training for owners. This equips owners with the knowledge and skills needed to properly care for and handle their animals, as well as improve their health and wellbeing. A training workshop held during June reached 37 owners and included topics on: animal health, welfare and best husbandry practices.
With the onset of monsoon season, the APOWA team educated farmers on specific precautions to protect animals from weather-related health issues. These seasonal care tips are essential to prevent illness and ensure working animals remain healthy throughout the rainy season.
Thank you for your ongoing compassion for working animals and for your generous donations. You are creating a brighter world for these often-forgotten and neglected animals, and are improving the quality of their lives.
