As we welcomed the colder days of November, we continued to focus closely on our horse, Shakti, and her treatment for kidney disease. We’re happy to share she is responding well to her ongoing treatment and remains bright, active and comfortable under the watchful care of our veterinary team. Last month, she underwent a dental cleaning and descaling procedure— an important step, as dental infections can worsen chronic health conditions. Shakti handled the procedure calmly, and it has already helped improve her overall comfort while eating. Additionally, she has been started on a bone supplement to further support her long-term health.
Markhu, our senior horse, is also going okay. Though his mobility remains limited due to his old tendonitis injury, he spends his days peacefully resting and sunbathing — two of his favourite activities. He continues to eat and drink reliably, and our caretakers ensure he receives all the support he needs to stay comfortable through the cooler weather.
Across the sanctuary, the rest of our residents are going really well. Winter brings out a quieter rhythm in the herd — more time spent basking in the sun during the day and gathering in warm, sheltered spaces at night. Our horses, cows, oxen, buffaloes, goats and canine companions are all in good health and spirits, supported by extra bedding, nutritious feed and attentive monitoring from our team.
This season has also reminded us of the importance of companionship among the residents. Many of our rescued animals have deep and lasting bonds, and they can almost always be found in pairs. Donkeys Bruna and Sangeet remain inseparable, just as Moni and Raamri continue to spend their days side by side. Bulls Kumu and Prawin share a steady, quiet friendship, while mules Moksh and Pappu mirror each other’s movements wherever they go. These partnerships offer comfort, security, and joy — an emotional richness that reflects how deeply animals also rely on connection.
Mini horse Apache and her best friend, Haluman, are doing particularly well. Their bond remains as strong as ever; they are rarely seen apart, whether exploring the paddock, sharing a meal, or simply standing side by side in peaceful silence. Their companionship continues to be one of the sweetest everyday reminders of the emotional lives of the animals we care for.
As we move into December, we remain deeply grateful for your support, which enables us to provide lifelong care, comfort, and medical treatment to our rescued and retired working animals.
