sad goodbye renews sanctuary’s commitment to rescuing working animals in nepal
Animal Aid Abroad, together with our partner Animal Nepal, continues to provide lifelong care and dignity to rescued working animals. In March, the sanctuary said a heartfelt goodbye to Markhu, a senior horse who had lived in safety and comfort for nearly 12 years after being rescued in 2014.
Markhu’s Legacy of Care
When Markhu first arrived at the sanctuary, he suffered from severe lameness and overgrown hooves after years of hard labor as a working horse. Thanks to your support, he experienced a life of compassion, proper veterinary care, and dignity — something very few horses in Nepal ever receive. Despite ongoing treatment for tendonitis, his condition worsened, and veterinarians made the difficult decision to humanely put him to sleep. Markhu’s story is a reminder of why sanctuaries are vital: they transform suffering into peace and safety for animals who would otherwise be forgotten.
As we say goodbye to our senior residents like Markhu, we remain committed to welcoming other animals in need, so they too can enjoy comfort, security, and dignity.
Rest in peace beautiful Markhu.
Ongoing Care for Sanctuary Residents
While saying goodbye to senior residents is never easy, Animal Nepal remains committed to caring for the animals still in their charge. In March, all residents received their six‑monthly tetanus vaccinations and deworming, ensuring protection against preventable diseases. Hoof trimming was also carried out for horses Raamri, Apache, and Moni, while younger horses like Honey showed encouraging cooperation during treatments.
Challenges and Resilience
The sanctuary also faced environmental challenges last month, when strong winds damaged the roof of one enclosure. Thankfully, no animals were harmed, and caretakers quickly repaired the structure, ensuring continued safety and shelter.
Global Impact Made Possible by You
