Einat

Even in your blindness, you showed us so much!

In 2005, our partner, Pegasus, rescued Einat – an old, blind female donkey who was wandering around a very busy road in eminent danger of being run over. The police had come, tied a bright red nylon tape around her neck which read "Israel Police", and left.

Einat was one of the reasons why this partner group founded the Pegasus, a donkey sanctuary, because they understood she will need a home for the rest of her life. . Pegasus named her Einat (in Hebrew the name sounds like the word "eye") because even without eyes, she could "see" and do everything – using her other senses to live life to the fullest. She heard us, smelled us, felt us and tasted the sweet carrots that she loved so much.

Every single morning, she would welcome everyone with a loud, happy bray. Fourteen years spent doing her part in the Sanctuary as the tribe's eldest, receiving all the newcomers at the sanctuary – smelling, consoling and feeling their emotional and physical wounds. Even in her blindness she led them, encouraged them and showed them and everyone at Pegasus, how to overcome everything and persevere.

Until the fateful night that took her away from us to the eternal grazing grounds – she was about 35 years old! Even though there are over 100 others here, something is missing in Pegasus’ yard, someone so special who left a huge void when she departed.

And we already miss her so much. We miss her blind, free and selfless love.
On hard days, when despair set in and we found it difficult to see down the road, she was always there and, in her blindness, could always see that tomorrow brings a new day and new hope.

Rest in Peace Einat…
