New Visitor & Education Centre in Zambia Boosts Donkey Welfare Knowledge

Animal Aid Abroad (AAA), together with our partner Zambezi Working Donkey Project (ZWDP), is advancing animal welfare in Zambia by combining veterinary care, education, and community outreach. In April, the team treated 241 donkeys and proudly opened a new Visitor & Education Centre at Maramba Farm, a hub designed to raise awareness and improve the lives of working animals.

April Achievements: Veterinary Care and Education

  • 241 donkeys treated, exceeding monthly targets, with services including dipping, deworming, and wound care.

  • Five mobile clinics conducted across six villages, expanding reach to new areas such as Mbita, Maloni, Kabila, Ngwenya, and Musanza.

  • 88 owners educated on humane practices, with 11 inhumane ox yokes replaced by humane harnesses.

  • Launch of a Libuyu education program, guiding residents on humane responses to trespassing animals.

Emergency Case Highlights Need for Education

An injured donkey in Libuyu had to be humanely put to sleep after suffering a fracture caused by retaliation from a resident. This incident underscored the importance of community education. The very next day, ZWDP held an awareness session with 20 residents, distributing welfare flyers and teaching constructive solutions for managing animal trespass.

Opening of the Visitor & Education Centre

The new Visitor & Education Centre at Maramba Farm will serve as a permanent hub for:

  • Community training on humane handling.

  • School programs to instill compassion in younger generations.

  • Public awareness campaigns to elevate the status of working donkeys.

This centre represents a major step toward ZWDP’s vision of a Zambia where donkeys are treated with compassion and respect.

Rescue and Recovery Updates

  • Gucci and Mapenzi, two donkeys with severe wounds, were treated and are now recovering well at Maramba Farm.

  • Black, a geriatric donkey, is healing from a fetlock fracture thanks to X‑ray diagnostics and box rest.

  • The sanctuary currently cares for 28 rescued donkeys, ensuring safety, nutrition, and dignity for each resident.

Global Impact Made Possible By You

Every clinic, rescue, and education program is powered by your generosity. Together, AAA and ZWDP are turning burden into care and proving that local partnerships are the key to global change — ensuring working donkeys in Zambia live healthier, more dignified lives.
