From Trauma to Gentle Care: Transforming the Lives of Rescued Donkeys in Israel
Animal Aid Abroad, together with our partner Starting Over Sanctuary, is giving donkeys in Israel the chance to heal from trauma and rediscover dignity. At the Hope Complex, animals rescued from neglect, abuse, and injury receive veterinary care, safe shelter, and the gentleness they need to begin anew.
Expanding Care at the Hope Complex
In March, the sanctuary cared for 67 donkeys and two mules, welcoming 13 new donkeys and two mules into the complex. Many of these arrivals faced serious health challenges:
A jenny with a blind, infected eye underwent surgery and is now recovering.
Several elderly and visually impaired donkeys were moved to the complex for safety and rehabilitation.
Two donkeys were treated for fungal skin infections, while others received care for abscesses.
Frail, blind, and young donkeys were given secure environments tailored to their needs.
Two elderly mules joined the complex, requiring special diets and close observation.
These cases highlight the sanctuary’s commitment to individualized care, ensuring every animal receives the treatment and environment they need to thrive.
Transitions and Farewells
March also saw 11 donkeys leave the Hope Complex to join rehabilitated herds or other shelters. Some were relocated after successful treatments, including hoof rehabilitation and orthopedic care. Others, once timid, gained confidence and were integrated into new herds.
Sadly, the sanctuary said goodbye to an elderly donkey who had recovered from severe wounds but later passed away unexpectedly, likely from a stroke. His story reflects both the resilience of rescued animals and the sanctuary’s dedication to giving them comfort until the end.
