Donkeys Find Hope & Healing in Israeli Sanctuary

Your heartfelt donations are helping to care for 44 rescued donkeys living in Starting Over’s sanctuary in Israel. Five new residents were welcomed last month.

During August, six donkeys entered the Hope Compound (intensive care unit):

Three donkeys were admitted with skin-related conditions:

  • One jenny has a pressure sore near a joint and will require prolonged treatment.

  • One jenny entered with skin infections: she has a known sensitivity to fly-transmitted infections and requires intensive treatment and skin protection. She came in with her young son.

  • Another young foal has a fungal skin infection and was brought in with his mother.

Three new residents also entered the compound for various reasons:

  • One donkey with a corneal ulcer.

  • An elderly donkey with laminitis who can’t obtain the enriched diet available in the old donkeys’ compound. She was brought in to have access to a proper diet.

  • A young, weak donkey who needs to gain weight.

In August, seven donkeys were well enough to leave the Hope Compound:

  • One jenny treated for an ear infection (a recurrent condition) + her daughter.

  • A donkey with eye inflammation who also gained weight.

  • Another donkey with healed pressure sores who also gained weight.

  • A jenny who successfully gained weight moved to a larger herd.

  • An older jenny who entered the sanctuary in June was acclimated successfully and moved to the old donkeys’ compound.

  • Unfortunately, one donkey passed away. She was new to the sanctuary and was very old and frail. Despite medical evaluations and treatment, her condition worsened.

Starting Over could not care for these donkeys without your amazing support. You are helping these precious creatures to heal from their previously harsh lives, so they can go on to experience safety, peace and comfort.
