Transforming the Lives of Working Animals in Afghanistan
As usual, the dedicated Nowzad team assisted many working animals in need during September. They reached 184 working equines with veterinary care, held educational sessions for owners, and distributed blankets, first aid kits and humane harnesses.

Veterinary Care
No less than 184 working animals were provided with veterinary care during September. This included deworming and vaccinations for rabies and tetanus.
Ailments treated included:
Respiratory issues
Wounds
Hernia
Colic
Limping
Acidosis
Fever
Anorexia
Body pain
Diarrhoea
Swelling
Weakness
Theileriosis
Botulism
Constipation
Joint problems
Hoof problems
Thirty other animals were also treated, including cows and calves.
Hospitalisations
Five animals - including two donkeys and three horses - were hospitalised last month. One donkey had fallen down a slope on a mountain and sustained severe wounds.
The other donkey was suffering from extensive, infected wounds caused by improper harnesses.
The horses were hospitalised with weakness and limping, wounds, and severe malnutrition and botulism.
Other Cases
The Nowzad team attended to an emergency case of a horse who had colic. [This is the light brown horse with the lower white leg in the photos being loaded onto a truck]
They also performed surgery for a calf with a hernia.
Fifty-six horses were also attended to by a farrier during September.
Educational Sessions
Two education sessions were delivered in September. The first session was for donkey owners at the hospital with information provided on:

The team then introduced and distributed first aid kits, blankets for the upcoming winter and proper harnesses.
Nowzad also distributed leaflets and posters for World Animal Day on October the 4th. This literature included information on proper animal husbandry techniques and how owners can improve their animal’s welfare.
