Friendicoes - one of our partner groups in India - treated an astonishing 870 working equines in December through their mobile vet clinic.

Thanks to your heartfelt donations, they now also have the capacity to assist donkeys who are used to carry construction materials for high rise buildings.

Mobile Veterinary Clinic

Your generous donations are now providing enough funding so Friendicoes can provide essential care for working donkeys in addition to horses. They are focusing on assisting donkeys used to carry construction materials like bricks up and down the stairs of high rise buildings. It is arduous and treacherous work, so these animals are particularly vulnerable to accidents, injuries and overwork.

Conditions treated in working donkeys and other equines during December included:

  • Colic

  • Wound dressings

  • Lameness

  • Deworming

  • Digestion problems

  • Vaccinations

  • Skin infections / allergy

  • Infectious diseases

  • Dental problems

  • Farrier cases

Some cases are outlined are below:

Colic

  • Involves frequent lying down and getting up.

  • Can be caused by impaction.

  • Pain killers administered and fluid therapy started.

  • Laxatives given via stomach tube.

  • Symptoms are relived with medicine.

Road accident

  • Whilst working on a road, this donkey had an accident with a vehicle.

  • Led to a lacerated wound on the hoof coronet.

  • The wound was cleaned with antiseptics.

  • Antibiotics, pain killers and a tetanus vaccine were given.

Multiple wounds

  • This poor donkey had an accident on a construction site and fell down some stairs.

  • Sustained multiple wounds on body.

  • The wounds were cleaned with antiseptics and dressed.

  • Antibiotics, pain killers and a tetanus vaccine were administered.

Lacerated wound on chest

  • A rope was tightly applied to this horse’s chest, resulting in a severe lacerated wound.

  • The wound was cleaned with antiseptics and dressed.

  • Antibiotics, a tetanus vaccine and pain killers were provided.

Thigh wound

  • Injury caused by an iron object.

  • Resulted in severe lameness.

  • The wound was cleaned with antiseptics and dressed.

  • Antibiotics, pain killers and a tetanus vaccine were administered.

Eye injury

  • Injury caused by head collar resulting in corneal opacity.

  • Eye was cleaned with saline and eye drops were administered.

Rescues

Mare

  • A mare was rescued from Gadoli village.

  • She was abandoned by the side of a road.

  • Suffering with a joint infection and was extremely malnourished.

  • She has now been rescued and brought to Friendicoes’ shelter.

Donkey

  • A donkey was rescued from Gurugram.

  • She had also been abandoned.

  • Suffering from severe lameness.

  • She was rescued and brought to the sanctuary.

Paravet Program

During December, paravets Om, Sakir, Salman, Jaheer, Nabab and newcomer Arsh, provided follow-up care for 444 working equines.
