Providing Care, Treatment and Shelter for More Camels in Need
At our partner sanctuary in Shaitrawa, India, dedicated Friendicoes staff ensure every rescued camel receives care and attention, nutritious feed, refreshing water and the freedom to roam and explore each and every day.
During the past three months, they have also been able to assist 65 additional animals in need.
Thanks to your heartfelt donations, the team now have use of a motorbike, which has significantly enhanced their reach and efficiency. It allows them to respond more quickly to emergencies and rescues to ensure the best outcomes for camels in need.
Friendicoes are continuing to monitor the health and wellbeing of the camels in and around the sanctuary, and they provide consistent care and follow-up treatments wherever needed.
The main health issues and treatments provided include:
Mange
Very common during this season.
Camels were administered ivermectin injections and had a good response to this treatment.
Contagious Ecthyma
A seasonal condition seen frequently.
Characterized by oral lesions around the lips and mouth.
Regular dressing and supportive care are provided to manage the condition.
This condition affects camels both within and outside of the sanctuary.
Lacerated Wounds
Notably caused by iron wires tied around legs, leading to deep injuries.
Wires were safely removed, wounds were cleaned and dressed.
Antibiotics and pain killer were administered.
Road Accident
An accident with a trolley (pulled by a tractor). Unable to stand due to injury.
Painkillers and multivitamins were administered.
A crane was arranged to assist in lifting the animal to a standing position.
Eye Injuries
Mostly due to grazing-related accidents.
Camels’ eyes were washed with clean water and medicated eye drops were applied.
Maggot-Infested Wounds
Typically result from injuries caused by barbed wire fencing.
Wounds were cleaned thoroughly with antiseptics, ivermectin was applied, and wounds were properly dressed to encourage healing.
The sanctuary vet, Dr Akhilesh, is also completing a course in acupuncture for large and small animals, which will add to the treatments offered for the rescued camels.
With your kind donations, we will continue to support the running of this fantastic sanctuary for camels in India. Together, we are giving these often-forgotten animals lives worth living.
