Improving Working Animal Welfare in Chennai Through Veterinary Care, Rescue and Rehabilitation

In June, the Blue Cross of India (BCI), supported by Animal Aid Abroad, provided veterinary care for more than 30 working animals and attended to 29 emergency cases across Chennai. Their work included routine treatments, follow‑up visits, and the rescue of an abandoned pony, showing how timely intervention and rehabilitation can transform the lives of working animals.

Mobile Hospital and Field Activities

BCI’s Mobile Hospital continued to deliver veterinary care to large working animals, with horses making up the majority of patients. Treatments addressed a wide range of conditions including colic, lameness, wounds, respiratory infections, cellulitis, abscesses, dehydration, and trauma.

Regular follow‑up visits ensured continuity of care for chronic cases, improving recovery outcomes and strengthening trust with caregivers. The team also provided nutritional support and ongoing treatment for rescued animals undergoing rehabilitation at the shelter.

Challenges Faced During June

Extreme summer heat placed strain on both animals and veterinary teams. Locating working animals during outreach visits proved difficult, and in some cases owners were unavailable, delaying treatment. Self‑treatment or late veterinary consultation by caregivers often led to complications requiring more extensive management. These challenges highlight the importance of consistent outreach and education.

Case Study: Rescue and Rehabilitation of an Abandoned Pony

A pony used for commercial rides was found abandoned on the roadside with a severe leg wound. The injury involved significant tissue loss and posed a high risk of infection.

The BCI ambulance team rescued her and transported her to the shelter, where veterinarians initiated intensive treatment. Daily wound cleaning, antiseptic dressing, antibiotics, pain management, and nutritious feed supported her recovery. Over the following weeks, healthy tissue regenerated, the wound contracted, and she regained normal use of her limb.

Her recovery demonstrates the importance of rapid rescue response and sustained veterinary care in giving injured animals a second chance at life.

Building a Future of Compassion

The work carried out in June reflects the ongoing commitment of Blue Cross of India to improve the welfare of working animals in Chennai. By combining mobile clinics, emergency rescues, and rehabilitation, they are ensuring that animals receive the care, dignity, and protection they deserve.

This progress is only possible because of your support. Every treatment, every rescue, and every recovery is a direct result of your generosity, allowing AAA to sustain partnerships like BCI and continue transforming the lives of working animals.
