Achieving Long-Term Health and Wellbeing for Horses and Oxen
During May, Action for Protection of Wild Animals (APOWA) in India treated 101 working horses and oxen through their mobile clinic. Their free clinic particularly benefits animals whose owners are unable to afford veterinary care.
The APOWA team saw a variety of conditions including fever, cough, wounds, infections, parasites and malnutrition. They also provided preventative care, such as vaccinations and deworming, to ensure the long-term health and wellbeing of these animals. In total, 304 animals were vaccinated.
In addition, APOWA educated 34 owners on animal health and welfare, proper care and handling, and avoiding heat stress and dehydration during the summer months.
Twenty-nine animal owners benefited from the helpline desk service run by APOWA vets. This service provides immediate advice for owners concerned about their animals’ health or who have questions regarding their care.
Working Animal Champions (WAC) have been trained by APOWA and can provide first aid care when required. During May, WAC provided first aid for 54 bullocks.
This project is not only enhancing the health of working animals but is also strengthening the bonds between owners and their animals. Thank you to all our wonderful AAA donors for supporting this crucial project for horses and oxen.
