Today, we also remember and honour working war animals, past and present

From donkeys and horses providing transportation, to dogs sniffing out enemies, pigeons as messengers and taking airborne photos, and many animals even acting as mascots to provide comforts against hardship, animals have served soldiers throughout the historic war years.

Sadly, according to the Australian War Memorial, of 136,000 Australian horses sent to the First World War, only one returned.

In fact, we witness these incredible acts of service to this day. Horse drawn carts have been used for transportation amid fuel shortages in the current war in Palestine.

Today, we honour these incredible selfless animals who served all those years, and to this day, aiding humanity during these challenging times.
