Samson is probably around 18 years old, a life of very hard labour before we rescued him from the streets of Kabul. Now a very loving donkey who adores ginger biscuits and cuddles. Samson is known to talk a lot!!
Samson is given daily walks with our resident Afghan donkey herder and give our newly qualified vets the opportunity to learn proper handling techniques and practise administering daily health checks with a view to implementing a working animal care programme at some point in the future when funds allow.
Update (August 2015)
Samson, Rosie and Kushi have really gone from strength to strength under our care.
They have played a pivotal part in our education programs for humane treatment of working animals.
Update (July 2016)
Samson; the old man of the Nowzad stables is very content these days to do nothing but graze his days away on the hillside overlooking the Nowzad shelter. Friendly only with his carer Juma, Samson has proved he is not overly interested in assisting with the training of future Afghan veterinarians.
Update (September 2017)
Samson is one of the first donkeys who came to Nowzad. One of our neighbours owned him and would use him to carry heavy loads.
We advised him not to use this donkey for work because he just did not have the strength and energy. Nowzad rescued Samson from the neighbour to relieve him of his heavy workload. He is an old donkey and lives a peaceful life at the Nowzad Donkey Shelter now. He wasn’t so friendly at first but has relaxed in his old age and enjoys the company of people and will even let us hug him.
