Life is pretty tough for the 9 ponies that cart the 22 tonnes of daily rubbish around the island of Gili Trawangan. They work 7 days a week in hot and humid tropical conditions pulling huge loads up the ramps to the tip.The ponies are not fed enough calories to allow them to maintain their weight while working in these conditions and are all very underweight. They are currently fed minimal concentrate feed as pellets and grains are expensive to buy. The chopped grass and bran that they are fed just doesn’t contain enough calories and the ponies are struggling, we really need to get more concentrated feed to these guys to help them.
The ponies’ equipment is also an area of great concern as many of the leather straps are held together with nails and wire, which then rubs against the ponies’ sides causing nasty lacerations.
Please consider helping these guys, they really need all the help they can get.
Meet Two of the Ponies:
I'm Bert! I work every day pulling a rubbish cart around the island, picking up and removing the trash to keep it clean for the tourists. My friends and I work really hard, and I hope you can help us so I can have some pellets to eat, a new roof so I don’t get wet from the rain and some harnesses that do not cut me from the sharp nails and wire used to hold the strapping together.
Hi, I’m Ernie! Sorry for not looking up - I’m very hungry after a very hard day’s work carting rubbish with my friends. I wish I had some better feed that would help me cope with the heavy loads and long hot days. I also need better tack that does not hurt me - I have many cuts and wounds all over my body from the horrible harnesses they use on me.
