The campaign to secure a phase out of live animal exports is continually evolving and growing and there is always a lot happening. Earlier this year, in conjunction with WSPA, SLE (Stop Live Exports) posted a 2010 Live Exports Year in Review to Federal MP’s and WA State MP’s, which outlined issues such as high mortality reportable incidents on board live export vessels, the high demand for chilled product in the Middle East, lack of monitoring at Fremantle Port and much more. A copy is available from the SLE website. In March, SLE volunteers met Prime Minister Julia Gillard at a Community Cabinet meeting which was fantastic.
On the 22nd March 2011, five MP’s spoke against live exports in favour of a chilled meat trade in Federal Parliament. Labor MP, Janelle Saffin, presented a private members motion stating that live exports should be phased out in favour of local jobs. The members that supported the motion were Melissa Parke, Kirsten Livermore, Jill Hall, Dick Adams and Adam Bandt. It’s great to know that this issue is being heard and debated in Parliament.
Letters to your State and Federal MP are very important. Never underestimate the power of a individually worded letter! Jodie at SLE is more than happy to assist people to write a letter and respond to letters from their MP. At their many meetings with MP’s, the feedback is generally that the standard form letters are often disregarded, especially they are from people outside the electorate. One important tip is to always ask a couple of specific questions in your letter. Letter writing tips can be downloaded from the Stop Live Exports website, or you can contact Jodie at
